Unnecessary part? Original part and I’m sure it will fit perfect, however I’m currently running my d/w without it due to the old chopper falling apart and hesitant to install it. The reason is it is just a such poor design (boo Whirlpool) that will inevitably clog rather sooner than later. Spring rusted away in less than a year. These are not OEM quality. Mine was junk in a year. There were two major failures.First the chopper blades don’t ride on the screen so no scissor action on food particles. You shouldn’t have to clean this part if it is functioning correctly.
